High school is not the same journey for everyone — but traditional schools often treat it that way. Whether it’s due to impersonal classes, absent counseling, family challenges, or children of one’s own, not everyone reaches graduation the same way. Association House High School, a Youth Connections Charter School, offers a new path to graduation for 16 to 21-year-olds in Chicago who have been left behind by traditional public schools. As a Level 1+ school, our goal is to prepare successful, productive, and compassionate members of a diverse, competitive, and global society. Psychosocial Rehabilitation provides a structured, therapeutic program that offers group and individual services aimed at building social, economical, vocational, independent living skills, symptom management, and other skills. To eliminate the perpetuation of harmful stereotypes against marginalized individuals and communities, it is important that we continually assess ourselves and our practices and address our own implicit biases.

And perhaps of greatest importance, we will maintain dedicated efforts to culture change at Association House. With Michelle Obama as its founder, it has been 30 years since Public Allies Chicago launched a community-based asset model that changed how emerging civic leaders are developed and engage with Chicago communities. The Drop-in Center provides a safe and comfortable gathering place for adults with mental health symptoms who are transitioning from life in a facility to life in the community.

This level of complex and coordinated engagement leads our participants to higher levels of success. AHHS is focusing on building active learners and students who are engaged in their communities. We offer students the opportunity to lead student organizations and become active in community events. We promote life-skills development training which includes problem-solving and conflict resolution, as well as family and peer relationships.
We commit to empowering students through relevant antiracist education. We will work to develop the essential tools each student will use to transform their lives and realize their endless potential. Integrated health provides free, bilingual primary health and psychiatric care for low-income, under- and uninsured individuals with mental illness, developmental disabilities, or co-occurring disorders. The Association House High School offers a new path to 16 to 21-year-olds left behind by traditional public schools. As such, we will work within our institutional structures to implement anti-bias training consistently across all levels of the House. We will maintain dedicated efforts to the recruitment and retention of diverse employees and participants. We will convene and support the ongoing recommendations of an Association House DEI Committee.
With dedicated bilingual staff, we work diligently to help our participants lead successful and comfortable lives. AmeriCorps members will serve as Youth Development Specialist in which they serve as program staff and work directly with club members. Through implementations in some of the programs just mentioned, the goal is that our club members will improve in key academic areas such as Science, Math, and Reading. Our Workforce Development team envisions ending unemployment and poverty through their highly-effective programs.
